The other motivation for this project is that I’ve been thinking about setting up a sensor suite for fun to monitor more exotic things like air quality, and gamma radiation. I honestly have forgotten a lot of the more first principle mathematics, so this is coming from an odd perspective of relying on a lot of half remembered intuition. This article is going to assume a basic understanding of digital signal processing. I guess it can be argued I “saved” $40, but as you’ll see, it would be a hard sell based on the cost of labor. In fact the manufacturer actually sells a version of this device with the capability I added built in:

This hack was mostly done to try my hand at RF reverse engineering, rather then to solve a real problem. I figured I’d be able to either directly parse the transmissions, or tap into the data received at the display. I got a weather station that transmits its measurements over RF to an included display. While I kept it nearby during development, here it is at its final destination: Background In the end I was able to feed the data to weather underground to use as the frontend. I ended up reverse engineering both the RF transmission, as well as the inter-chip communication at the receiver. I bought a cheap weather station with the intent of adding networked data logging.
